Different types of batteries

In this orb of rapid technical development, our dependence on electrical and electronic products ever escalating day by day. The role of the battery is remarkable. A battery is a combination of one or more electrochemical cells that convert chemical energy into electrical energy. Each cell consists of two electrodes, namely anode and cathode with an electrolyte in between. At each electrode, takes some electrochemical reaction takes place leading to potential differences between theElectrodes. This potential difference known as electro-motive force drives the electrons. You can only be used once and tossed out, or can be recharged and used for years. On the basis of this kind are discarded batteries and large, into primary and secondary batteries.

Primary batteries are those that are normally not rechargeable, they are on the electrochemical reactions take place irreversibly in this battery. Once the supply of reactants is exhausted, it would be nothing. Then you have to go foranother. During the assembly itself, it can generate electricity without any further notice. They are also dubbed as disposable batteries. They are nothing more than dry-cells, since the electrolyte used in this is a paste like material, rather than a liquid. Primary cells are devices in which low power consumption. They have more initial tension and a good performance. Zinc-carbon batteries are low cost. You used a bad performance and low temperatures, especially in toys, flashlights, radiosetc.

Alkaline-manganese oxide batteries offer good performance, better performance and low temperatures, the costs will be higher. It is seen in airplanes with transmitters or receivers, television, calculator, etc. Zn / HgO batteries offer high energy density, constant voltage, good shelf life, etc., and in photography, hearing aids, pacemakers, sensors, etc. in the military zinc / silver-zinc battery provides good energy density, high speed and performance in clock, rocket, space will be usedApplications, etc. For memory chips are used in electrical equipment Li/SOCl2 batteries. They have a longer shelf life. Zn / air batteries offer good durability and a high energy density, and they change with temperature. They are used in traffic lights, clocks, electric fences, etc.

Secondary batteries are the batteries, which are as the electrochemical reactions can be reversibly re-loaded, meaning that it is also possible to convert electric energy into chemical energy,by raising it. It is necessary to recharge before using it for free, because the components in the discharged state at the beginning. These batteries can be by the presentation of electricity and the devices in the provision of electricity can act calculated to be named as chargers. The charger or battery can be recharged and get done as often as possible. Lead-acid batteries are the known secondary batteries.

They have decent high and low temperature performance, low cost, lowEnergy density, low charge retention and in cars, airplanes, lawn mowers used. Ni-Cd, Ni / Fe, Ni / Zn bids durability, longer life. Ni-Cd can be used in airplanes, power applications. Ni / Zn batteries are used in motorcycles, military vehicles, etc.-coordinate silver oxide batteries such as Zn / AgO, Cd / AgO good discharge include longer shelf life, high energy density, high cost, etc. The former is used in submarines , military equipment, etc. and this is used in satellites, power tools.Li-Poly batteries used in mobile phones and they are not volatile, overpriced.

Primary batteries are less expensive when compared to the secondary. They have higher energy density compared to the latter. Primary Battery wispy and offers his life, but they can not be reused. Instead of proper disposal when they are thrown, it will cause pollution. Secondary batteries vote bank-to-high power density and high discharge. The charge retention is poor.Only a few standards are available.

Proper storage is as high temperatures and high humidity is required, the batteries can be transmitted. They should be kept in a discharged state since they can discharge if they are in the assembly and as the days pass, they become broken.

Picking Safe Power Tools

When using power tools, security is the most important thing to be considered. Some men try to "do not have the right tools" excuse to buy the latest toy for Home Depot, but in reality it is important to use the correct tool for the job, to be sure.

Some of the best known brands of tools are DeWalt, Black & Decker, Skil, Craftsman, and many others. Bosch Power Tools are known for the enduring powerstand in their line of cordless tools. Bosch powered tools are designed for low noise and low vibration, Bosch Power Tools are designed, built and will aid in the workplace by the punishment professionals give their tools in their haste, the work on time . quit

With regard to the maintenance aspect of such tools, common sense again of paramount importance. The four most common power tools that mostBuy Do-it-yourself, is the circular saw, jig saw, router, and Sander. When purchasing power tools keep in mind that most consumer evaluations show that you pay in general, what you do. Regular maintenance and tuning of the instruments will keep operating under the recommended values, and always receive adequate training in dealing with the tool and with the right power tool for the job. Many hardware stores will give you a free demo and in some cases, an adult class on proper toolUse.

As an added benefit, the instrument of our guides have not only a better graphic displays to its users, what role should look like any of the device (and what to do if it does not), many individual manufacturers are explicit instructions and guidance on the safety and maintenance of each power tool.

What happens if you prefer to buy than to rent? If you need to rent any tools, they look over very carefully before you leave the store and make sure that they are wellusable condition and appear to have no security problems.

Finally, when he looked for the right-powered tools, you need a company that has everything you need to run securely sell your tools and can offer you the best advice on which tool is right for the job at hand . acquire

Power Tools - Tips to Buy, Rent Or Borrow

Are you sick and tired of looking at that wall? Have you dreamed of just ripping it out and making the master bath bigger? Or maybe, you're just ready to add that deck to the back of your house. Your friends are already on board for a weekend of free food and drink in exchange for a little manual labor. Whatever the home improvement task, it will go much faster and easier if you use power tools.

Here are some basics to buy, rent or borrow for any remodeling project, big or small:

- Sanders- The orbital Sander is a hand-held machine that makes short the work of sanding down rough edges. It is great for putting the finishing touches on a project. For more heavy duty work on wood or metal, a belt Sander is probably your best bet. Using Sanders saves you time as well as energy (it is hard work sanding by hand!). For safety purposes, if you don't have a dust bag attached to the machine, make sure to wear a dust mask.

- Saws- There are various saws to choose from, but the job really dictates what is best. First, you have a reciprocating saw. This one looks like a giant electric turkey carver. It's good for jobs like cutting out windows and doing small detailed cutting. Next is the circular saw. This one is hand-held and is good for making quick short cuts that don't have to be perfect, like shortening a 2x4. It's also good for making weird angled cuts on big boards that would be too awkward to hold up to a table saw. Which brings us to the table saw. This is great for running a big board through and making a straight cut. If the board is really long, you will need another person to help. Finally, there is the Miter saw. This is a great tool for making angled cuts that have to be perfect. For instance, cutting crown molding has to be just right for the pieces to fit together in the corners. The last two saws are a bit more expensive and may fall into the rent or borrow category, unless you plan to do a lot of projects.

- Power Drills- There are a lot of different types of electric drills and the one you use depends on the type of job. For most of the work you will probably be doing, a regular cordless drill should have enough power. You can use it to drill through wood, metal and plastic. You may need different types of bits depending on the material you are drilling. Once you have the hole drilled, you can use a screwdriver attachment to finish the job using the drill. An electric drill is a very versatile tool and should be in anyone's collection of power tools.

Just remember to always operate the power tools as recommended in the manual and when you are finished, clean up. A properly maintained machine will last a long time and you want to take care of your investment. Also, make sure you follow the safety guidelines and use some common sense when operating these machines. One false move and you could end up in the back of an ambulance hoping they can reattach your finger! Seriously though, be safe and work smart. That is the best way to get the most out of your power tools and make your home improvement project a success.

Excavators - Everything You Need To Know

The backhoe is one of the most innovative pieces of modern technological machinery. In fact, if you go to any site you are already almost certain to find at least one backhoe loader. This is because they are versatile, flexible and have a wide arrangement of equipment to help with digging and excavations.

The common misconception is that it is called a backhoe loader, because the blade is mounted on the rear of the tractor. That is simply not true. In fact, SkidLoader - a type of backhoe loaders - have their buckets mounted in the front. The reason this is called a backhoe loader, because the action takes the shovel. Compare, as an excavator digs - forward and upward. Bucket, on the other excavations by the shovel through the mud in a reverse gear.

Excavators are not limited to construction sites. In fact, they're perfect tool for many different landscape options. In addition, make sure their large hydraulic equipment poweredInstruments for the demolition of old buildings, penetrating rock and cement, picking up and moving heavy objects, and more than trenches.

In fact, when it comes to small and medium sized landscaping, it is often the only hard piece of equipment that is needed since the ability, like a bulldozer and backhoe, and work has.

Besides, what does a digger convenient is the fact that you can drive directly to your job area, instead of towing ortransport with another vehicle. This is due to the fact that it is a diesel engine.

The operation of a backhoe loader is not the easiest thing in the world. First, you need functions that control both front loader and the backhoe. You must be able to simultaneously control and direct the tractor, while working with the joystick control for the equipment and facilities.

There is no better tool to dig a trench as a backhoe loader. In fact, a trench can be dugin less than 15 minutes, when an experienced operator behind the wheel.

Since its first inception in 1953, the backhoe loader has undergone many innovations. The focus of backhoe loaders now is to offer comfort and beautiful for the operators to the work environment more productive and safer than ever before.

In conclusion, I give you everything you need to know, excavators.

Guide to Buying Miter

In the good old days a miter saw was something quite simple, this held the blade in place. This has ensured that the blade was kept at a certain angle. These instruments were designed as a rule, so that you precise cuts in 90 to 45-degree angle and only by an amendment of the saw. These were usually hand cut hand saws that could be used easily, frames, moldings or chair. There are many people who are still with this form of manual miter saw in order, because it works soThere is no need to replace them.

I got the power!

The power is often the most important thing when you tools. Purchasing power tools saves time and effort as you do not spend as long as this hard manual labor. There is nothing wrong with a hand saw, it is the task that is designed to do. However, a chainsaw is not only faster, but it should also result in a more precise and cleaner cut. Power tools are becoming increasingly popular because theyactually no longer more expensive than a standard saw. Not only that, but power tools make your job even easier, you no longer need to put in each hand to get nice looking results.

If you are looking for professional saws there is a plethora of models that may be of interest to you. Some radial saws allows you to set the level very closely, you can get wood to be cut in a number of different angles.

Another angle to miter Saws

Miter cuts are not only for the manufacture of picture frames and cutting of moldings, but they are also very important for the production of table tops and countertops. You can use a compound miter saw to make a connection this will be cut counter tops safer because it provides a beveled cut on the straight edge of the tip.

You can obtain a similar result if you use a radial arm saw, but this will require several passes through the machine at different angles. A good radial saw, is the> Dewalt model, but this is no longer sold in America. You should be able to pick one of these second hand, since they are still a fantastic miter saw.

Panel saws are needed when the time working all furniture. These saws are designed to cut large pieces of plywood into rectangular shapes. These are ideal for cabinets. A miter saw could then be used to the frame, doors and moves to create. The frame is usually made of a softwood because it is fairly inexpensive and easy to handlewith.

There are many different types of saws that are required to be made a functional workshop. If you do not, then saw a miter saw for a radial.

Cat Behavior - 5 Reasons Why could get to the root of behavioral problems with your cat

If you bring a cat into the house, you ask a lot from him. In most cases, the situation is working very well, and says a lot about the bond between cats and humans. Ask your cat to scratch in just one place, but throughout its territory. You ask your cat to relieve himself only when you him. You ask him, his ability to gracefully from countertops and tables Ignore directly. And you ask him to his natural nocturnal plan to suit your daySchedule.

Most cats can easily maker these compromises. For those who do not have to do this, you find out, why not solve a problem can begin.

1) Stress: Cats, you will find any kind of stress change, and often rightly react by changing their behavior in an attempt to better. A cat could be in a field house, a new pet cat has brought in. The spirit of a brand, this behavior makes perfect sense and has a calming effect on him. The world smell like your catreassuring to him, if you do not. Limit its space for a while, or him on medication.

2) Medical Problems: Behavioral problems are often a sign of disease in cats. With untreated diabetes in cats, for example, a cat will drink and urinate frequently, and start the selection at other places, in order to relieve himself. Associate a cat with a urinary tract infection could ease the pain with the litter box to avoid, and that. Not cure all behavioral techniques in the worldmedical problem, you need the help of your veterinarian for this.

3) Boredom: Since you have asked your cat, his whole world and have offered only a few hours with you, or some time with a toy mouse, an indoor cat has a distinct tendency to get bored. Indoor cats need a lot of things to keep themselves amused, and add some different toys to spend more time playing with your cat, or adding another cat home for companionship was the brandDifference.

4) impositions Look at yourself and your role with your cat. They ask more of him than he can possibly give? Your cat litter box can be to boycott if they are rarely cleaned, ask him or terminating no scratches on the couch fair if he has nothing else to scratching. Give him a few different ones before you for good behavior.

5) never properly trained to start with: If everything you do is always to scream or hit your cat, you are not teaching him anything other thanTo avoid you. Physical correction will never change the behavior of a cat, because they do not understand. Stresses With this type of correction, they simply made, leading to more behavioral problems.

Look what has happened lately in your life. How did your cat react to this situation, and how do you have? When you realize the behavior of your cat's not evil, the problem may be easier for you to live here to turn the situation work.

The interesting thing about lithium batteries

The interesting thing about batteries is that you can make from a potato. Or a tomato. Or even a lemon or lime. In fact, any liquid or moist object that has enough ions can be electrically conductive to serve as the electrolyte for a cell (see Wikipedia.com). Basically you need to insert two electrodes made of different metals in the wet object, and a chemical reaction occurs when the two metals on the wet cell response, aka: Potato. Cool, huh? Of course, this kind of"Battery" is no real practical use other than force, perhaps to a small clock for a very short time.

A battery is basically stored chemical energy, electrical energy is converted into the usable when the battery terminals on some material) (this behavior can be transferred and the two metals are joined together chemically react. Such as nickel and cadmium in nickel-cadmium battery. Basically, the amount of energy received by you), (volts, how much "intended chemical reaction," You will be positioned among thetwo metals. For this reason, that lithium batteries, the "latest and greatest", which have been powdered milk.

Lithium is a highly reactive alkali. Lithium will react letter if left out in open, humid air. The combination with the hydrogen in the water molecules in the air is of a whitish metal with a black cloud in front of your eyes away. Therefore, when lithium is stored in its pure state is stored in less than oil is to respond to it to stop. Lithium is also veryflammable, so if there was already on fire, water on them it will only burn more. Lithium metal must be covered with special chemicals, extinguished the flames. Li) is also the lightest metal (number 3 on the periodic table of elements. These two properties, low weight and a lot of potential energy to make a large lithium metal used in a battery.

Lithium is highly reactive function is also a flip side of the battery is in the industry. Lithium batteries used in computershave "fired because of their high reactivity. Dell Computer recently had a heavy laptop battery (recall this very computer I'm typing on has been compromised). lithium batteries give a lot of heat and have been burning themselves known. The recall costs industry, but lithium megabucks benefits outweigh disadvantages, and there's lithium technology advances at a rapid pace. "In an interview with BusinessWeek on 16 Confirmed in February, chief executive Katsuaki Watanabe thatToyota, the third generation of hybrid cars, due in late 2008 or early 2009 using lithium-ion batteries. Lighter and stronger than the current nickel-metal hydride packs, which help new batteries for fuel-efficient hybrids. ... "We have the battery can develop over time," he says. ... "We are now reduced to, at the half, both size and cost of the third-generation hybrid system," says Watanabe. "

For most people, including batteries, the battery life, theimportant aspect. How long will it take before I have to recharge / replace it? Basically disposable batteries lose 10-20 percent of their original charge every year when stored at extremely high temperatures (battery life can by them) may be extended in a cool place. So the batteries that you buy at the dollar store does not necessarily mean that last a long time, always the producer of the music on the batteries that you seek.

Rechargeable BatteriesSelf-discharge more rapidly than disposable batteries - up to three percent per day. This rate may from extreme temperatures, so remember, if you save your rechargeable, battery-operated electric tools / flashlights in your garage. Rechargeable batteries also reduce by use. Low capacity nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries may, for example, for about 1000 cycles before pooping is charged to you. In general, a longer, slow charge (overnight) will result in a longer battery life.

It is also what is the "memory effect" in terms of batteries. Memory effect occurs in NiCd and NiMH batteries when crystals form on the electrodes and a reduction of active surface that is loaded (wikipedia.com). This happens when the batteries are not fully discharged before they get to be recharged. NiCd batteries should always be fully discharged before being recharged, because they are suffering, aremore of memory "effect" than NiMH so. The advantage of using lithium-ion batteries is that as a young dog, they do not have a "memory effect". Invite them whenever you want, and they are always fully charged and ready to run.

In summary, the three most commonly used power tool batteries in order of performance:

3. NiMH:

leads to the worst in cold temperatures

has the shortest duration

highest self -Level

-lighter than NiCd

2. NiCd:

leads in cold temperatures to 20F

-low self-discharge rate than NiMH

has a lower self-discharge level than NiMH

heavy-weight

-suffer the worst from "memory effect" if not fully discharged before recharging.

1. Lithium Ion:-lightest weight

lead even at temperatures as low as zero degrees Celsius

-the maximum amountthe life cycle

-lowest self-discharge rate

have a faster loading time

do not suffer from the dreaded memory effect "

** BUT: you may experience permanent damage to Li-ion batteries, when stored at low discharge level, so be careful and keep them well placed to account. So, you start degrading as soon as it leaves the factory. Be sure to check the manufacturer of the batteries before you buy.

:: Please recycle YOURBatteries::

"Her ever since their invention over 250 years, [[battery]] are among the most expensive energy remained, and their manufacturing consumes many valuable resources and often involves hazardous chemicals. For this reason, most areas now, battery recycling services at our disposal to prevent back some of the toxic (and sometimes valuable) materials from used batteries. batteries can be harmful or fatal if swallowed. It is also important to prevent dangerousElements that go in some batteries, such as EAD, mercury, cadmium, into the environment. "- Wikipedia.com

Firewood Box - More than just a place for the wood

A wooden box is a tool that is a part of your home where you should be the fireplace are the norm. Their practicality, durability and style options make it an easy choice to add to your home. To give you an idea of some of its services, we have compiled.

1. Keeps firewood in one place.
A practical advantage of this is to prevent it, the risk of tripping over loose firewood. In addition, it creates a specific location for firewood to make it easier to inventoryto determine the actual amounts of timber, when another trip is required under the woodpile.

2. Protects the floor and carpet from dirt and bark.
One of the biggest advantages of the use of firewood a field is that it helps to clean the area. Often the bark and wood dust, which easily fall off the wood when they can already be placed in the fire. The box is kept very effectively, this pollution at a location to be easily disposed of if the fund is empty can. This leads to lessRisk of damage to wood floors, stains on carpet, scratches, or near other objects such as furniture.

3. There are a number of stylish designs.
These boxes are a great way for inclusion in the home decor. Many of the designs can look like a basic and rustic, while others they are usually expensive and complicated design. But is used regardless of the design, the result is that consumers should have little difficulty in a version that will look great in theirHome.

4. The costs are relatively inexpensive for the specified value.
Costs on average range from anywhere from $ 50 up to $ 200. The more wood standard models will be on the lower and upper ends of the models on metallic materials with contemporary or futuristic looks taking. These prices are more than fair to you if you check their durability, style and functionality. You can expect to take in these fields for many years.

By bringing together these various servicesin the background, it is easy to see why many people have chosen to add wood-boxes in their homes.

The difference between price and cost

"How much does it cost?" Is usually the question that people ask when they buy something. This is not the real issue that they demand. What the people want to know is the price, how much money they give to purchase the item. The prize is a one-time thing, the money is there and took the item home.

The cost of an item is different, and generally is considered last, if at all. The real cost is the price and the money it takes to get the itemduring their lifetime. The cost of an item continues for days, weeks, months and even years after the price has been paid.

Let me give you an example. When I decided to buy a cordless drill, I went to Home Depot and started shopping. I know something about the quality of the tools, but when I saw the price of the drill from the top makers such as Bosch, DeWalt, Porter Cable did, I decided to go with a "cheaper" manufacturers. In and of itself, which I chose was not a"Bad" drill is not the "cheapest" on the shelf. However, it was not the quality of the companies mentioned. So I paid the price of the drill, which included a charger, two batteries and a carrying case.

My son, the carpenter is also purchased: a cordless drill about the same time I did. Since he needed, high quality and durability, he bought a drill from DeWalt made. It also came with a charger, two batteries and a carrying case. He almost paidthree times what I did.

Here is the result. He uses his drill much more than I and usually for more serious work. Quit within three years of my drill work. The charger stopped working does not even work and the drill with a fully charged battery. So, back to Home Depot I went looking for another drill. My son is a drill still works and he uses it constantly.

As I said in this scenario that I see the overall view of the drill was much more than the price I had paid. As a replacement for theBatteries for my drill press would be almost as much as I originally paid the price. Then there's the cost of the charger. Are the only thing I did not, would be replaced, have been carrying case would be, although this is the case would be a defective latch.

My new cordless drill is made by another company (which is still not the highest quality as those bought my son) and when I add the price of my original holes and the one I just bought, it's almost as much as if I would have bought that havehigher-priced one in the first place.
Why have I tried to get with less?

It could be a variety of reasons:

1. Ignorance: I do not know the true value of the higher priced Drills

2. Mentality: I might be tempted to buy the cheapest price

3. Financial: I have one I can afford to buy at the moment

4. Carelessness: I can be motivated by apathy

5. Misled: I think I could be the "best" deal from what I read about theProduct

In my business we focus on the quality of articles to help and understand that people is what price they pay today actually cheaper to buy a twenty-five years, as if they have something with a lower price over the counter. Which is preferable, pay a higher price at the time of purchase do not yet know it will be the last purchase they will buy the rest of their lives, or something that should be much cheaper since it still costs far more than the same life time of the year ?
Keep the price or cost changes, or both when making a purchase?

Power Tools - Does He Need So Many?

If you're concerned about an overabundance of power tools flooding the garage - don't be. Just as you need an abundance of shoes -heels, flats, boots, sneakers, and sandals - all in various colors and styles, your husband needs those power tools. Just as you wouldn't wear your sneakers with a summer dress, your husband certainly wouldn't use a miter saw to do a circular saw job.

For even the most basic of home improvement or hobby projects, a minimum four or five power tools are necessary for the job. And that's just the bare minimum. More complex jobs might require a dozen or more specialized tools.

Although it may seem like a drill and a hammer can perform just about any job, in reality there are not as many versatile, multi-use tools as you might think. A circular saw can cut straight lines and not much else. It can't get into small corners, cut through very heavy materials, or give you smooth clean lines.

A miter saw can cut corners, but it can't make intricate cuts or saw a large plank in half. You'll need a jigsaw for more detailed cutting work that neither of these saws are fit to perform - and all three of these actions will be necessary just to cut a new frame for a door. And that's just the cutting part.

To put together an entire project, he'll need two guns-nail and staple. A nail gun may seem useless. He has a hammer after all, right? Hammers can't get a job done quickly, are not as accurate, and can't be manipulated to adjust to odd angles. They also tend to hit thumbs more often than wood. The other gun, a staple gun, is a must for most upholstering or carpeting jobs. Nails destroy fabric and can't be camouflaged as easily.

Then there is the drill. Electric drills are the cornerstone of any toolbox, able to tighten nuts and bolts far better than performing the job manually. Some men find that they need an extra battery pack or both a corded and cordless version. Because drills are used so heavily, having a backup is always a good plan.

Have a bracelet that accessorizes your favorite shoes? Well, he needs accessories for his power tools as well. So while he may only own five or six power tools, it may seem like ten times as many due to additional but necessary equipment.

A drill needs many different sized and shaped bits to perform different jobs. Nail guns, staple guns, and spray paint guns will need an air compressor to power them (which often take up a good amount of space). Vices, tables, clamps, cords, sawhorses, and battery packs all come as part of the package.

So before you decide to dump all of his power tools, consider helping him organize and simplify them instead. Throw out old power tools that no longer work and toss the accessories that aren't a necessity. Or perhaps just have him use his tools to build you a new shoe rack.

Scrapbooking Tools: Product Review: ProvoCraft Tools Sew Crafty Mini

At first glance, the ProvoCraft Tools Sew Crafty™ Mini seems like a great idea. Its compact, appears to be easy to use, and has the ability to be battery powered or can plug into the wall, if you purchase the separate power adaptor for it. At around $10, it is also affordable. The machine itself comes with a bobbin of white thread, a needle threader, and a couple of replacement needles. For an additional $10, you can also purchase the accessory pack, which comes with bobbins threaded in every color, several more replacement needles, and another needle threader. Geared more towards a tool for scrapbookers, I was intrigued by this product and purchased one for my supply cabinet.

What seems like a good idea actually is; at least, until you start using it. While the compactness comes in handy when you're cramped for space, and the lack of wires makes it portable, that's where the advantages to using this sewing machine end. Once you've gotten your thread through the needle eye, and you start sewing, you'll find that the thread doesn't want to stay in the tensioner. Once this happens, your stitches are loose and pull out easier. Tightening the tensioner doesn't help this problem, and often if you're in the middle of sewing something, you can't easily slip the thread back in. Instead, you have to stop by pushing the awkwardly placed on/off button and reinsert the thread. If you're trying to sew a longer item, you're in for a lot of starting and stopping.

The Sew Crafty™ Mini is also incredibly loud for being such a small tool. It makes an almost deafening whining sound as it works, making it impossible for me to do any quiet sewing when my 10-month old sleeps in the next room. You can also forget trying to watch television or talk on the phone while using this item, because the noise is just that bad.

While it's easy to figure out how to thread the machine, and how to use it, it is also difficult to remove your item from the machine once you've completed your stitching. Many times, the thread gets caught in the area below the foot. Pulling on it to try to remove it threatens to pull out your stitching (which, if the tensioner has come loose several times, has taken a while to accomplish), and adjusting the needle wheel to move the needle up and down and release the thread only works half of the time.

Stitch selection is also a minimum. The Sew Crafty™ Mini only does one stitch: a straight line. You can't really expect more than that for $10, but it would be nice if it did another stitch for those who don't own a full-sized sewing machine.

All in all, if I have the time to sit down and try to create a straight line stitch with the Sew Crafty™ Mini, I also have the time to pull out my bulky sewing machine and use it, instead. If you would like a sewing machine, but don't have the money or space for one, this is the perfect tool. Otherwise, your money is best spent on the real, life-sized thing.

Cake Decorating Tools - Paper Cone Secrets

Ornamenting tubes and cones are the basic cake decorating tools every cook needs. So, here's how you can make your own and save yourself a little extra money.

Constructing A Paper Cone

The one thing that discourages a beginner from using paper cones is not knowing how to construct one properly. With five minutes practice, you can become very proficient in making a cone.

The idea is to roll the paper into a cone-like shape. The tip of the cone is cut off, and the tube is dropped inside the cone. This cone is then filled with a decorating icing and closed up by folding or rolling over. Although any type of paper can be used, the best is a vegetable parchment. If this is not obtainable, waxed paper may be used. The heavier the waxed paper, the  easier it is to construct the cone. Brown wrapping paper is satisfactory if not used for any great length of time. It absorbs moisture and will break when wet.

Vegetable parchment comes in various sizes and cuts. A recent development in the art of cake decorating is the introduction of flexible and transparent plastic cones. These cones offer several important advantages -they are strong and easily handled, the plastic may be washed and the cones re-used many times.

To make a paper cone, from a 9" roll of paper, first roll out a sheet approximately 17" long. Lay the sheet of paper flat on a table. Grasp the outer edges between your thumb and forefinger.

Turn the right hand corner and roll the right hand until a partial cone is formed. Circle the right hand with the left hand. Move your hands back and forth to adjust the point of the cone until it is needle sharp.

After the cone is formed, hold the completed cone firmly, at the top with thumb and fingers. Cut off the tip about 1/2 to 3/4 inches from the end, depending on the size of the tube you are using. Drop tube into cone.

Do not fill the cone over 3/4 full. After the cone is full, the top of the cone is folded in. This keeps the icing from backing out of the cone as pressure is applied.

Constructing a Small Paper Cone

For a small cone, an oblong piece of parchment paper may be cut in half and the same procedure followed using the long side of the triangle to construct the cone. As the cone becomes empty, it is necessary to continue folding the top down as the icing is forced out. Let's now take a closer look at how to get the most out of this cake decorating tool.

Tube Writing

The cone is held with the thumb and two fingers. Pressure is applied thru fingers and thumb. The cone is held at a 45 degree angle to the writing surface.

Stems

When making stems or stamens on the entire hand is used to apply pressure.

Stringwork

When working on the side of a cake or doing fine string work a more controlled pressure is obtained by holding the cone with thumb and two fingers.

Proper Method Of Holding A Cone: Details Of Pressure Control

After you have constructed your cone, place your tube in it and fill the cone with icing. The next, and most important step, is to apply pressure to the cone so that the icing will flow out the tip. You might imagine that you can simply take a tube full of icing and give it a squeeze and the icing will simply flow out the proper end. You will find on your first few attempts that this is not the case. Before applying pressure to the cone, be sure cone is folded properly to eliminate back-flow of icing.

The next step is very important. Place the cone in your right hand. Your right hand should be at the very top of the cone. The first two fingers of the left hand are used to guide or steady the cone.

With a little practice, you will find using the cone very easy and before you know it you'll have mastered the use of one of the most important cake decorating tools.

Types of Truck Tool Boxes

There are a variety of tool boxes available today to meet your needs, differing by factors such as material, price, purpose and manufacturer.

Plastic tool boxes are great for more recreational use around the house and are the least expensive type. They are not as durable, but if cost is an issue a plastic tool box should suffice. They are not good for heavy duty professional use. Aluminum is another common material for tool boxes. It is more durable than plastic tool boxes, yet is still light weight. Aluminum tool boxes are slightly more expensive than plastic tool boxes, but they will last much longer. However, of all the materials, steel is the strongest and most durable. Steel tool boxes are best for heavy duty professional use and will endure the regular use. As would be expected, steel tool boxes are the most expensive. A power coated steel finish is best for standing up to the weather and outside environment.

In addition to the material, there are several types of tool boxes from which to choose. For instance, truck tool boxes are great for trucks with limited space in the cab to haul tools. The tool box can be safely carried in the bed of the truck. A variety of styles are made to fit different types of trucks. Top mount tool boxes are actually mounted in the bed behind the cab of a truck. Top mount tool boxes can have single or dual lids and one compartment or multiple compartments. The style of box you choose depends on what tools and what size tools you will carry. Side mount tool boxes mount on the side rail of the truck’s bed, though most of the box remains inside the bed. These tool boxes come in a variety of sizes to fit all sizes trucks, whether compact or a full size. The most popular tool box for a pick up truck is the crossover box. It fits behind the cab of any size truck, and most can be bolted to the bed of the truck to help prevent theft. Finally, a truck lumber rack may be a good accessory consider especially if the toolbox is hauled and/or attached to your truck. Truck lumber racks can help prevent scratching and dinging and provide a mount on the bed of the truck to carry your tools.

Delta tool boxes are one of the most preferred brands of tool boxes by professionals. The styles come in both steel and plastic. The delta champion series has a good line of crossover tool boxes, which have an insulted lid with three layer laminate increasing the durability and security. The pro-series delta tool box is a more durable box as it is made of steel and aluminum. Other brands of tool boxes include Homak tool boxes which come in plastic, metal and a plastic-metal combination. Homak manufacturer also offers a line of tool bags which may be a good alternative to the heavier, metal tool boxes.
